CareFirst (BCBS) To Present Use of Compliance-Prompting Packaging to Improve Medication Adherence at RxAdherence2015
The HCPC is excited to have John O'Brien, Vice President, Public Policy, CareFirst (BlueCross, BlueShield) present at this year’s RxAdherence, Strategies to Improve Patient Outcomes conference. Our attendees have frequently asked for a presentation from a major healthcare insurer and we are happy to be able to fulfill this request. CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the largest health plan in the Mid-Atlantic region, has operated the nation's largest patient centered medical home program of its kind since 2010. The CareFirst PCMH and TCCI programs have recently launched new innovative Comprehensive Medication Review and Medication Therapy Management programs to improve medication use, improve health outcomes, and lower total cost of care. Mr. O’brien will outline the CareFirst PCMH & TCCI program, the details of the CMR & MTM program, and their use of compliance prompting packing to improve medication adherence! HCPC Prescription Packaging In-Use Stability Study Available for Download
The HCPC recently released the results of its study investigating the potential degradation of commonly used prescriptions during normal use when packed in common prescription formats. The study is available from the organization’s website,www.hcpconline.orgThe study reveals the effects daily environmental exposure in the
homecan have on Simvastatin, Lisinopril and Metformin tablets, three commonly prescribed drugsfor chronic conditions. The data supports the theory that drugs packaged in formats that fail to protect every dose until patient usehave an increased risk of physical degradation. More specifically, the products tested in polypropylene vials, HDPE bottles or PVC blisters showed higher physical degradation than those packaged in PVC/Aclar® or PVC/PVdC blisters.

Letter from the HCPC Board
Happy 2015, RxAdherence readers, and welcome to our revamped RxAdherence News. We hope you like the new format and still get the information you need. I wanted to thank those of you who participated in our annual meeting last November and also thanks those of you who participated in our recent webinar on the HCPC Prescription Packaging In-Use Stability Study. Now that we have professionally printed copies available, we will be disseminating the information revealed by this study to a wide audience of influencers. At the HCPC we feel that the pharmaceutical supply chain needs to be re-visited and a better understanding of product excursionsin particular those dispensed in polypropylene vials, HDPE bottles or PVC blisters which in the study showed a higher physical degradation than those packaged in PVC/Aclar® or PVC/PVdC blisters.

Letter from Executive Director January 2015
Happy New Year, RxAdherence readers! It should be an interesting year with a new congress and senate sworn in and ready to improve our lives in so many ways. Well, we can hope anyway.

We will be watching, though. With all the threats of killing or curtailing Obamacare, those of us involved in healthcare have to pay close attention. While I don’t believe they can kill it and to be quite honest, I don’t think they should, there is still tremendous room for improvement. Again, we can hope.

Well, the HCPC was making our own contribution to healthcare improvement last year with the completion and release of our “Prescription Packaging In-use Stability Study” late in the year. You can download it at
