Letter from the HCPC Board

Hello, RxAdherence Readers. It’s been a busy summer as the HCPC Board has been delving into the results from our soon to be published research, the HCPC Prescription Packaging In-Use Stability Study. Several HCPC member companies took part in this long-awaited research and we look forward to sharing the results with you at our Annual Members Meeting, Tuesday, November 11. The meeting will again take place at the Honeywell Larry Bossidy Learning Center in Morristown, NJ. We thank Honeywell for their continued hospitality.

The results obtained throughout the study are consistent with the theory that there can be considerable physical degradation of drugs during the patient’s in-use” stage when they are not dispensed in packaging that provides effective protection, particularly during an “in-use” environment where the presence of oxygen and humidity are present, such as a bathroom.

Letter from the HCPC Executive Director

Hello, RxAdherence Readers. Here we are on the downhill side of summer, heading toward what the Farmer’s Almanac promises will be another chilling and snow filled winter. What happened to July? I’m beginning to believe in time travel. It seems like the older I get, the faster the summer (and years) go. Now where have I heard that before? Oh yes, from my parents, who never seemed right in my 20’s and just started getting smarter and smarter as I got older. There may be hope for us. We could be brilliant in another 20 years.

So with that in mind, as an industry, are we getting smarter as we get older? In some areas I would argue, “yes,” but in other areas . . . not so much.

No one can doubt advances in medicine. Developments in bio-tech continue to break through boundaries. Applications of pharmaceuticals continue to refine the way common chronic diseases are targeted. More care is given to not just dealing with the problems but eliminating them.

On the whole, the industry is advancing, getting smarter, as it gets older. I guess the problems I see are that the industry seems to forget its’ older children, the ones who brought us this far. It is by all means great that new developments in all manner of drug delivery continue to make the administration of medications more effective and in many cases more convenient but the great majority of our market is still solid dose drugs and their application is far from perfect.

Prescription Drug Price Growth Higher than other HC Spending Sectors

A new report by the Altarum Institute highlights that prescription drug price growth exceeds all other major categories of national health care spending, including hospitals. With continuously increasing prices, the HCPC hopes that some of the pricing covers the moderate costs of innovative adherence measures to keep patients on their more expensive medications. Smart Pill Bottle Pilot Test Being Conducted by Reed National Military Med Center

In the pursuit to keep patients adherent, a pilot study is underway at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will be tested in a 12-week randomized trial at Weill Cornell Medical College involving 70 HIV-positive patients with sub-optimal medication adherence. The study will focus on a smart pill bottle invented by researchers at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and licensed to AdhereTech. The smart pill bottle uses a sensor within the bottle to detect if the bottle has been opened and calculates the number of pills or liquid remaining in real-time. The data is then transmitted wirelessly to computer servers where it is analyzed for any missed doses or errors. If a patient misses a dose, the patient or other approved caretaker is notified via on-bottle lights and chimes and an automated phone call or text message. The use of real-time data analysis can detect lengthy nonadherence and follow-up via a phone call or text message for information on the missed dose or doses. Case managers can then follow up to determine appropriate action including changing the dose switching the patient to an alternate medication. The particular smart bottles are registered with the as Class I medical devices and the AdhereTech data collection system is HIPAA-compliant.
