Letter from HCPC Board

It was good to see many of you at our RxAdherence 2012 conference, co-sponsored with UBM Canon. The speaker line up was one of the best developed for this conference to date, with presentations from Merck, Pharmacy Quality Alliance, National Consumers League, and the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services. We even had a few presentations by our esteemed members, Anderson Packaging/AmerisourceBergen, Burgopak and RxPack McKesson that required additional time for the very interested audience's Q&A. We were pleased with the increase in the number of pharmaceutical manufacturing representatives at the conference. Read More.

Letter from the HCPC Executive Director

Hello, RxAdherence readers. Welcome to Spring 2012, politics are in the air. Fertilizer is flying, no wonder everything is so green.

In late March the HCPC co-hosted RxAdherence 2012 with UBM Canon. It was one of our best conferences in the 20 year history of the event. The quality of speakers we were able to assemble was a testament to the growing importance of medication adherence in the broader market. To have representatives from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the National Consumers League, the Veterans Administration and the Pharmacy Quality Alliance all gathered and focusing on medication adherence as a critical issue to their individual organizations was inspiring.

And yet, as we move slightly away from this discussion I am deeply concerned about another area of the supply chain which could undermine all these efforts at improving medication adherence. I'm talking about the security of the pharmaceutical supply chain. If you've been involved in this industry you are more than aware of the impact counterfeit medications have, most recently with counterfeit Avastin coming in through the legitimate supply chain and reaching patients. Yes, the patients may have been adherent but the drug wasn't real! And, yes, patients were harmed. Read More.

Data Needed to Position Compliance Packaging as Innovation

Reigning in healthcare costs is going to take more than cutting. According to the NEHI Innovation Barometer, a survey sponsored by NEHI in partnership with Ernst & Young, a majority of opinion leaders (78%) believe that "healthcare costs can be controlled if there are new, innovative ways to be more efficient in delivering health care services." These respondents chose this option over controlling costs if "cuts are made and strict spending budgets are required." And more than half (54%) stated that they support government actions to improve the overall U.S. health care system, even if they increase the federal deficit in the short term.

Sounds like an opportunity for compliance-enhancing packaging to me. But for packaging to garner wide support, it seems more data is needed.

At RxAdherence 2012 in March, organized by the Healthcare Compliance Packaging Council (HCPC), speakers cited the significant expenses associated with patient noncompliance and the need for new approaches. "Adherence is a complex behavior, and it is the largest health issue going on right now," said Hayden Bosworth, associate director, Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care, Durham Veteran's Affairs Medical Center. (He also is Research Professor, Department of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, School of Nursing, Duke University Medical Center.) "Patients need interventions that work," he added.
