Packaging Council

Welcome to the
Healthcare Compliance
Packaging Council

The Healthcare Compliance Packaging Council (HCPC) is a not-for-profit trade association that was established in 1990 to promote the many benefits of unit dose packaging -- especially the fact that these formats can be designed with compliance-prompting features proven to help people take their medications properly.

HCPC Prescription Packaging In-Use Stability Research demonstrates that significant physical changes can occur in tablets when distributed in low barrier or multi-use containers in as little as 30 days.

Know us better

Pharmaceutical noncompliance is a tremendous problem in the United States. Estimated annual costs of patients not taking their medications approaches $300 billion.1 It is also estimated that 125,000 Americans die annually (342 people every day) due to poor medication adherence and 10% - 25% of hospital and nursing home admissions are also caused by people's inability to take their medications as prescribed.2

Sad News concerning an Industry Friend

Mr. Gene C. Matthews

Gene Mathews, a pharmaceutical packaging industry icon, recently passed away December 3, 2014. Gene supported the blister packaging and flexible markets throughout his career with Reynolds Metals and Constantia-Hueck for over 40 years as a top-notch packaging engineer. He has been highly recognized in our industry as an expert in the field, conducting frequent training programs and supporting packaging operations and developments around the world. He was greatly appreciated by his colleagues for his extensive knowledge and his wonderful, friendly personality. Those who knew him will miss him dearly.

Outside of his professional career, Gene had a very adventurous life racing motorcycles on a dirt track and sailing racing catamarans. Gene still held his captain's credentials and close industry friends had the pleasure of crewing a vacation sail with him through the Windward Islands. He sailed in the Newport Bermuda race in the early 70's his team won at least once. Gene pleasure sailed with his wife, Jean, and several of their children many times over the years.

He also remained an avid motorcycle rider with his custom Harley®, as well as a Triumph®, just for fun.

HCPC is proud to announce it is a member of NEHI

"There is no question that packaging is a part of the overall strategy to addressing medication adherence," Tom Hubbard, NEHI's Vice President of Policy Research... told PMP News. "Medication adherence is a metric in the quality ratings for Medicare drug plans. There are goals that are pressuring drug plans to hit targets for adherence. Payers and providers are thinking more strategically about adherence."... Healthcare plans are trying to figure out the right mix of steps to keep patients adherent and head off overall medication spending. Packaging is part of that response. My personal sense is that there are industry players that are leading the way in packaging. Walmart, for instance, has made a major commitment in its strategy to use packaging."
